Michael Shinagel is dean of Harvard Extension School, dean of the Harvard Division of Continuing Education, and senior lecturer on English at Harvard College. After completing his PhD at Harvard University, Shinagel was assistant professor of English at Cornell University for three years before becoming a professor and chairman of the department of English at Union College from 1967 to 1975, when he returned to Harvard. He has also been a lecturer in Extension since 1975, teaching graduate seminars on the English and American novel and on satire.
He is the author and editor of books on Daniel Defoe and Jonathan Swift, as well as many articles and reviews. His The Gates Unbarred: A History of University Extension at Harvard 1910-2009 was published in 2009 and received the Philip Frandson Award for the best book on continuing higher education in 2010. In 2004, he received the Julius M. Nolte Award of the University Continuing Education Association for outstanding leadership and achievement in continuing higher education.
He served as master of Quincy House, the largest of the Harvard College residential complexes, from 1985 to 2001. In addition to his scholarly field of English literature, Dean Shinagel is an internationally recognized authority on continuing education and currently serves as editor of the Continuing Higher Education Review.
