The nursing program is fully accredited by the Iowa Board of Nursing, the Iowa Department of Education and for Veterans Educational Benefits. The program is also a participating member of the Iowa Plan for Educational Articulation in Iowa. The associate of applied science degree will articulate for advanced placement in all nursing programs at baccalaureate-degree granting institutions in the state of Iowa. Graduates of the nursing program are eligible for the NCLEX examination for licensure as a nurse at the LPN or RN level.
The nursing curriculum is established on a ladder concept. The first year is the practical nursing coursework. Classes are scheduled for one summer and two semesters. The second year is the coursework required for an associate degree in nursing, which is scheduled for a second summer and two additional semesters. Students who successfully complete the practical nursing curriculum are awarded a diploma. Students who successfully complete the second year of the program are awarded an associate degree in nursing.
Students who successfully complete the practical nursing coursework may be eligible for admission into the associate degree program. The student must complete all science courses with a grade of C (2.00) or better prior to admission to the associate degree program. All other eligibility requirements must be met.
Students are strongly encouraged to become familiar with computers and gaining access to the internet. Nursing courses require students to access information from the internet. Current certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant is required for admission to the nursing program. Information about coursework for Certified Nursing Assistant is available at the college.
